From Loose Ring to Part Number

A loose retaining ring is genuinely hard to identify. Its free diameter differs from the shaft size it fits, callipers flex it as you measure, and the standards ladder is dense with near-identical sizes. Olypsys measures it without touching it, then names it.

One phone photo of a loose circlip…

…identified as DIN 471 - 28 × 1.5 at 93% confidence, with close sizes ranked below it.

Near Sizes, Told Apart

A 28 mm and a 29 mm external circlip differ by less than a millimetre of free diameter. Olypsys measures repeatably to a few hundredths of a millimetre, then shows the best match alongside ranked alternatives drawn with real geometry, so you can see why the winner won.

Close sizes are ranked with match scores, so near-neighbours are never mistaken for each other.

What You Get

All Common Types

External (shaft) and internal (bore) circlips, heavy-duty rings, E-clips, and round-wire snap rings are detected and classified automatically.

Standards Built In

Identification against the DIN 471, 472, 983/984, DIN 6799 and JIS B 2804 E-ring tables, plus round-wire snap rings to DIN 9925/9926, including the withdrawn DIN 7993 sizes still found on older machinery. The fitting shaft or bore diameter is reported.

Real Dimensions

Free diameter (DIN d3), gap opening, and band width are measured from the photo rather than copied from a catalogue entry.

Non-Contact

Nothing squeezes or springs the ring during measurement, so the reading reflects the part as it actually is. Readings repeat to within 0.05 mm.

True-Geometry Diagrams

Matched parts are drawn with their true stamped geometry, tapered section, lugs, and pilot holes where they really are, beside the measured outline, with DXF download and an interactive 3D view.

Full Traceability

Photos, measurements, and identifications are saved to the Vault with operator and timestamp, ready for your next audit.

Work With Us

Circlip measurement is available today in the Olypsys app for Pro users. If retaining rings are part of your business, we should talk.

Distributors

Identify a customer's ring at the counter and quote the replacement immediately. Branded PDF reports included.

Enterprise

Roll out to every site with your own part catalogue, your workflows, and central data management in the Vault.

Custom Integration

The measurement engine is available for integration. We can build it into your own app, ERP, or quality system.

Circlip & Retaining Ring FAQs

Questions on DIN 471/472 free diameter vs shaft/bore size, E-clips, and non-contact measurement.

How do you identify a circlip size when its free diameter is not the shaft or bore size?

A DIN 471 external circlip for a 28 mm shaft has an unstretched free inner diameter (d3) of 25.9 mm, while a DIN 472 internal circlip has a free outer diameter larger than its bore. Olypsys measures the ring’s unstretched free diameter (d3), gap opening, and band width optically (without calliper pressure springing the ring), and matches it directly to the nominal shaft or bore size in the DIN and JIS tables.

Which circlip and retaining ring standards are supported?

Olypsys identifies external and internal circlips, heavy-duty rings, E-clips, and round-wire snap rings against DIN 471, DIN 472, DIN 983, DIN 984, DIN 6799, JIS B 2804, DIN 9925, DIN 9926, and withdrawn DIN 7993 sizes still encountered on legacy machinery.

Can I download a DXF drawing of a measured circlip?

Yes. Every circlip measurement includes both the traced outline and a true-geometry standard diagram (showing tapered section, lugs, and pilot holes), which can be downloaded as a DXF or SVG file or viewed in 3D.
